Women's soccer games Aug. 22 and 25 recaps

Aug. 22, Kansas City Kansas Community College at Kansas City, Kansas

The Lady Roadrunners opened the regular season Aug. 22 with a 2-0 loss to the Kansas City Kansas Community College Lady Blue Devils. KCKCC scored twice in the opening half.

"We started out a little tentative," said Head Coach Jaime Beltran. "It was the first college game that counted for most of our players. We had a couple of opportunities to score ourselves, but we were defending more than we were attacking. At halftime, we had a little talk and made sure that everyone was calm, told them just to go out and do the things that we had been doing in practice."

In the second half, the Lady Roadrunners generated several scoring opportunities, but couldn't find the back of the net. The offense produced six shots, four of which were on goal. Goalkeepers Samantha Curphey and Atziry Plascencia split time in the net. Curphey made five saves; Plascencia recorded four. Andrea Ramos, Kimberly Rosas, Ria Kessell, Diana Martinez, Karina Esquivel, and Alys Beadle all registered one shot on goal.

"We pressured KCKCC's goal for most of the second half," said Beltran. "We almost got a goal back with about 15 minutes to go in the game. Ria had a one-on-one opportunity against the goalkeeper. She did everything she was supposed to do and the KCK goalkeeper just barely got her fingertips to the ball and made a diving save. That kept us from narrowing the gap. I think if it goes in, we have a little bit more energy for the end of the game. We learned some things about our team that are hard to learn when you don't have enough players to go 11 on 11 in practice. It was positive overall; however, you never want to celebrate a loss. I like the way they turned things around in the second half."

Aug. 25, Barton Community College at Great Bend, Kansas

SFCC (0-2-0) traveled to Great Bend on Aug. 25 to take on the Lady Cougars. SFCC fell 9-1.

SFCC scored first with a goal from Alys Beadle inside the first minute of the match.

"We were able to intercept a pass," said Beltran. "Alys took on and beat a defender into the box and scored in the opposite corner of the goal. It was a good way to start the game, but we couldn't hold it."

Barton took a 4-1 lead into halftime. SFCC registered two shots on goal for the match. Curphey and Plascencia once again split time in goal for SFCC. Plascencia registered six saves; Curphey recorded three.

SFCC returns to action 5:30 p.m. Aug. 29 against Neosho County Community College at Clover Dell Park in Sedalia.
