Highland Softball Splits with KCK On the Road to Open KJCCC Action

Highland softball opened Conference play last week with a doubleheader on the road against Kansas City Kansas and controlled game one for the win, while falling in game two in what proved to be a tight battle late in the game.

Scotties took game one with a 10-2 six inning win, while in game two an early lead was not enough for Highland to hold off KCK as the Scotties fell 10-9 for the split on the day. With the split the Scotties move to 11-5 on the season and 1-1 in KJCCC action.

Game one saw the Scotties jump out to the early 3-0 lead but KCK fought back with a run in the second and third innings to tighten the contest at 3-2. Highland controlled the rest of the game with a run in the fourth and finished the game with three runs in the fifth and sixth innings each.

Bailey Lacy was strong inside the circle as she tossed six innings giving up two runs (one earned) on five hits and three walks, while striking out two. At the plate three Scotties had a multiple hit game as Isabella Konieczka, Alexis Hodapp and Hannah Schmidt each recorded two hits. Konieczka was 2-2 with a pair of runs scored, two walks and two stolen bases. Hodapp went 2-4 with three RBI's and a double, while Schmidt was 2-4 with two runs scored an RBI and a triple.

It was early offense in game two for the Scotties as Alyssa Wesley had a two RBI single and Lexi Hodapp a two RBI double and through the first three innings Highland led 6-0. KCK however flipped the lead to their favor with a big seven run bottom of the fourth making it 7-6. Scotties responded with the next three runs scoring two in the top fifth and another in the sixth, but again KCK had an answer tallying three runs of their own in the bottom of the sixth to hold a 10-9 lead and ultimately hand Highland the loss.

In the loss a quartet of Scotties had a multi-hit game as Konieczka was 2-4 with two runs scored, while Chevelle Sartin went 2-3 with two runs scored, an RBI and walk. Allyssa Griggs was 2-4 with two runs, double and two RBI and Hodapp posted a 2-3 performance with two RBI's, a double and run scored. Inside the circle Kelly Uthe tossed three and two-third innings giving up five runs (one earned) on five hits and a walk, while Sarah Bond and Lacy each tossed at least one inning, also.

The Scotties are back in action on Tuesday, March 26th at home against Labette in KJCCC action for a doubleheader slated for a 2:00pm start and the Scotties will also host Hesston for a Conference twinbill on Thursday, March 28th starting at 2:00pm this week.
