Box Score The Highland volleyball team picked up a win on the court on Wednesday as they traveled to Parsons, Kansas for a Jayhawk Conference showdown against Labette CC but both teams won off the floor as the two teams partnered up for a Barefoot fundraiser.
While the match was controlled and won by Highland in three sets winning 25-10, 25-17, 25-16 perhaps the story of the night was Labette hosting a Barefoot fundraiser that the Scottie volleyball team was a part of. Coaches from both teams coached the match barefoot in support of the Samaritan's Feet foundation which "shares a message of hope and love through washing the feet of impoverished children around the world and adorning them with new shoes." The two teams combined to generate a donation of over 400 pairs of shoes for the Samaritan's Feet foundation.
As far as the match the Scotties got off to a strong start on the night taking early control in set one working to a 17-8 lead when Labette called their second timeout of the set and Highland finished the set on a 8-2 run to win set one 25-10. Set two was a bit tighter but the Scotties managed to grab the lead and keep Labette at bay a late 4-0 run that included an
Amber Hildebrand ace helped Highland ultimately secure the set two win 25-17 as
Cajia Allen finished the set with a kill. In set three the Scotties worked to a five-point cushion in between them and Labette and capped the match with a 25-16 set three win.
The production continued to come from multiple avenues for the Scotties as it has all season as
Emma Cohalla finished with a 13 kills, while Allen was not far behind with 12 kills giving them both their ninth double kill performance of the season. Cohalla added two blocks and a pair of digs to her night, while Allen recorded five digs.
Katie Pearson notched 33 assists in the win and tied for a team high in digs on the night with nine, while also recording a kill.
Myla Turner at the libero spot notched nine digs, while both
Hannah Wagner and
Lee Sexton each tallied six kills.
The Scotties with the win extended their win streak to five-straight matches and four-straight wins in the series with Labette, losing only one set during the last four matches with Labette. Ninth ranked Highland improved to 15-2 on the season and 3-1 in KJCCC play. Next up Highland travels to Kansas City to play in the KCKCC Tournament on Friday and Saturday, September 21
st and 22
nd.
