The joy of sweeping a conference doubleheader quickly turned to the celebration of a milestone as the Barton Community College baseball team swept Pratt Community College 9-8 and 11-10 Saturday at Lawson-Biggs Field. The Cougars won both contests in walk-off fashion, winning game one with a Caleb Cherryholmes bases loaded walk and winning game two as freshman Trevor Turner blasted a bases loaded single to deep center setting off a series of celebrations on the field. As the Cougars chased and mobbed Turner behind first base, Barton Head Coach was congratulated by Assistant Coach Roger Ward as the victory marked the 1000th of Warren's collegiate coaching career. The mob of happy Cougars then quickly turned towards Warren, eventually catching and dowsing the 30th year Barton skipper with ice cold water. Having won No. 900 at the Barton helm on Wednesday, Warren reached the 1000 feat against the same school that gave him his collegiate coaching start. The teams concluded the 2014 regular season and the Pratt series finale on Sunday as the Cougars won a 20-16 slugfest. Barton finished the regular season 32-23-1 and 15-17 in the West Division of the Jayhawk Conference while finishing Pratt's season at 20-34 and 7-25 in conference play.
Contributing to Kansas baseball throughout his career, the Winfield, Kansas, native Mike Warren is in his 35th year coaching collegiate baseball after a successful Kansas high school and collegiate playing career. Winning the 1972 state championship at Winfield High School, Warren played and helped Emporia State University to a third place finish at the NAIA Championships. Beginning his collegiate coaching career in 1979 at Pratt Community College, Warren spent two years with the Beavers before moving on to Dodge City Community College in 1981. Warren coached the Conquistadors for three years before taking over the Barton program in 1984. Now in his 30th season as the skipper for the Cougars, Warren is 904-628-1 while his career mark is 1001-738. Warren's teams have won five Jayhawk Conference Western Division championships, two Western Sub-Regional championships, and have earned him four Western Division Coach of the Year honors.
Aiding in the development of the Jayhawk Conference Baseball Coaches Association in 1994, Warren was elected the association's first president where he initiated the first Region VI All-Star game to provide national exposure for sophomores in the Kansas junior college ranks. Touching the lives of over 900 student-athletes and coaches, Warren's coaching tree reaches nearly fifty former players and fifteen former assistant coaches, including two members of the Kansas Baseball Hall of Fame and one member of the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) Hall of Fame.
Barton will head to the Jayhawk East's No. 3 seeded Coffeyville Community College, 35-17 overall and 25-11 in the East, for a three-game series set to begin Saturday at Coffeyville's Walter Johnson Park. First pitch for Saturday's nine-inning doubleheader slated for 1:00 p.m. with Sunday's if necessary nine inning game also scheduled for the same start time.
