2019 All-KJCCC, All-Region VI Awards Announced

(KJCCC) BALDWIN CITY, Kan. – The Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference announced its annual baseball awards for the East and West Divisions today. The East Division consists of 58 student-athletes, and West Division 41 student-athletes earning honors. Both divisions have a first-team, second-team and honorable mention team.

In the East Division, Cowley sophomore catcher Cody Milligan was named the Player of the Year, while Cowley sophomore right-hander Brannon Jordan earned Pitcher of the Year.  The Freshman of the Year award went to Johnson County freshman right-hander Trey Ziegenbein and Dave Burroughs of Cowley was chosen the Coach of the Year.

In the West Division, Hutchinson freshman designated hitter Zane Schmidt was named the Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year, while Colby sophomore right-hander Logan Hoffman earned Pitcher of the Year. BJ McVay of Butler and Ryan Schmidt of Hutchinson were chosen Co-Coaches of the Year.

Cody Milligan – KJCCC East Division MVP

Cody Milligan put together an impressive offense campaign for Cowley this season. He batted .449 (89-for-198) with 17 doubles, six triples, five home runs, 80 runs, 56 RBIs, 27 stolen bases and 52 walks. He led or tied for the team lead in every category except home runs. In the conference, Milligan ranked first in walks, second in batting average and runs, tied for third in triples, fourth in hits and tied for ninth in doubles. Milligan also produced 29 multiple-hit games and 11 multiple-RBI games 

Zane Schmidt – KJCCC West Division MVP and Freshman of the Year

Zane Schmidt had a monster freshman season for Hutchinson, batting .395 (94-for-238) with 16 doubles, five triples, 22 home runs, 74 runs scored and 75 driven in. He also produced 27 multiple-hit games and 20 multiple-RBI games, including a six RBI game which he belted three home runs in an 8-7 win against Garden City, March 28. Schmidt led the conference in hits and home runs, ranked second in RBIs, fourth in runs, tied for fifth in triples and ninth in batting average. His 22 homers tie the 12th-best season total in conference history and are the second-most in team history. Twice during the season, Schmidt was honored as the conference player of the week, earning the award in weeks eight and 10.

Brannon Jordan, Cowley – KJCCC East Division Pitcher of the Year

Brannon Jordan has been the ace of Cowley's pitching staff the past seasons. This year he is 9-2 with 76 strikeouts in 56.2 inning pitched, and a league-leading ERA of 1.43. He is tied for fifth in the conference wins and 14th in strikeouts. In week 12 of the season, Jordan was selected the conference pitcher of the week. For his career with the Tigers, Jordan is 17-3 with 146 strikeouts and an ERA of 2.37.

Logan Hoffman, Colby – KJCCC West Division Pitcher of the Year

Over his two seasons as Colby top pitcher, Logan Hoffman has logged back-to-back 80-plus inning and 100-plus strikeout seasons. His career total of 230 strikeouts set a new conference career mark, breaking the previous best mark of 220 set 15 years ago. This year, Hoffman stands 8-2 with 128 strikeouts in 89.2 and an ERA of 3.11. He ranks first in the conference in innings pitched, strikeouts and strikeouts per nine innings at 12.85. He is second with eight complete games, third in ERA and tied for eighth in wins. His strikeout total this season puts him fifth place all-time in the conference. Hoffman has recorded double digits in strikeouts five times this season, including a season-high 14 in a 9-1 win at New Mexico Military Institute. He twice was selected the conference pitcher of the week, earning the honor is weeks eight and 10.

Trey Ziegenbein, Johnson County – KJCCC East Division Freshman of the Year

Trey Ziegenbein logged a Johnson County team high 85.1 innings in 2019, and finished the season 10-3 with 109 strikeouts and an ERA of 2.64.  His 109 strikeouts are the 11th-most recorded in a season in conference history, and are a new season-best at JCCC. He ranks second in the conference in strikeouts and tied for second in wins, third in ERA and complete games with seven. He also ranks fourth in strikeouts per nine innings at 11.50. Ziegenbein posted double digits in strikeouts six times this season, including a season-high 13 in a 4-2 win over Metropolitan. Ziegenbein earned conference pitcher of the week in week seven. 

Dave Burroughs, Cowley – KJCCC East Division Coach of the Year

Cowley skipper Dave Burroughs earned his eighth conference coach of the year honor this season while leading his Tigers to a 45-12 record, a No. 12 national ranking, a Central District championship and a berth to the NJCAA JUCO World Series for the ninth time in program history.  Burroughs ranks as the all-time victory leader in conference history at 1,299

BJ McVay, Butler & Ryan Schmidt, Hutchinson – KJCCC West Division Coach of the Year

Butler head coach BJ McVay and Hutchinson head coach Ryan Schmidt were selected as co-recipients of the West Division Coach of the Year for 2019. McVay led his Grizzlies to a 39-19 record and tie for the West Division Conference title. Schmidt guide his Blue Dragons squad to a 44-21 mark and a tie for the West Division Conference title. Both Butler and Hutchinson finished 22-10 in conference play. McVay has 265 career wins at Butler over nine seasons. Schmidt has compiled 267 victories at Hutchison over seven seasons, and 357 for his careers that spans 10 seasons.
