INDY, HIGHLAND PLAYER EARN WEEK 1 HONORS

Week 1 KJCCC Football Players of the Week:
Offense - Stephon Brown, Independence
Defense - DeAndre Butler, Independence
Special Teams - Jeri Velasquez, Highland

A pair of Independence Pirate players and a member of the Highland football team are the KJCCC Week 1 Players of the Week.
Independence's Stephon Brown was the Offensive Player of the Week and DeAndre Brown was the Defensive Player of the Week after a 48-29 victory over Dodge City in Week 1. Highland's Jeri Velasquez was the Special Teams Player of the Week.

OFFENSE – Stephon Brown, Independence
The Independence quarterback tied a Pirate single-game record with six touchdown passes in the season-opening victory over Dodge City. Brown completed 14 of 26 passes for 345 yards. His longest touchdown was a 90-yard scoring strike. Brown added 98 rushing yards on 11 attempts with a long run of 30 yards.

DEFENSE – Deandre Butler, Independence
A freshman defensive end, Butler racked up eight total tackles with four solo stops. He had four tackles for loss for 24 yards. Three of those were quarterback sacks. Butler also forced one fumble.

SPECIAL TEAMS – Jeri Velasquez, Highland
In his Scottie debut, kicker Jeri Velasquez split the uprights three times going 3 of 3 on field goals with his longest being from 31 yards and he added an extra point in Highland's 20-16 loss at Fort Scott.
