Coffeyville's Jay Herkelman To Coach In 1,000th Career Game Wednesday Night
COFFEYVILLE, Kan. – The illustrious career of Coffeyville Community College head men’s basketball coach Jay Herkelman hits another historic milestone on Wednesday evening when the Red Ravens hosts Hutchinson Community College for Herkelman’s 1,000th career game at the helm of the program.
Since coaching his first game as Coffeyville’s head coach in the fall of 1995, Herkelman has amassed a career record of 760-239 over his 30 years while leading the Red Ravens to 15 Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference Championships and the 2021 NJCAA Division 1 Men’s Basketball National Championship.
A 15-time KJCCC Men’s Basketball Coach of the Year and eight-time honoree as NJCAA Region 6 Coach of the Year, Herkelman was the first coach in KJCCC men’s basketball history to win the NJCAA Region 6 title in three straight seasons and has led Coffeyville to 12 NJCAA Division 1 Men’s Basketball National Tournaments.
Additionally, Coach Herkelman was inducted into the NJCAA Hall of Fame in 2018, the Red Raven Hall of Fame in 2020, and the University of Dubuque Hall of Fame in 2016.
Entering this season, Herkelman has the fifth-most career victories among active NJCAA Men’s Basketball coaches and is one of only 26 coaches in NJCAA men’s basketball history to amass at least 700 career coaching victories.
This season, Coffeyville is 17-4 overall with a 13-2 record in the KJCCC while currently holding the number nine ranking in the latest NJCAA Division 1 Men’s Basketball Top 25 poll.
