W. Basketball-Former All-American selected in WNBA Draft

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. -- Former Johnson County Community College All-American and Missouri standout Bri Kulas was selected Monday by the San Antonio Stars in the third round of the WNBA Draft. She was the 28th overall selection. Kulas is the first Johnson County women's basketball player to be drafted, and seventh in Missouri women's basketball history.

"We are so proud of Bri and so proud that we were able to be a part of her journey to this goal," said JCCC head coach Ben Conrad. "Her work ethic and commitment are second to none. We're very excited for Bri."

Kulas led the Lady Cavaliers in scoring in 2011-12, averaging 12.0 points per game, and helped JCCC to a school record 32-3 season, an East Jayhawk Conference title with a perfect 18-0 record, a No. 1 ranking for 15 straight weeks and a top 10 national tournament finish. She was also selected first-team All-East Jayhawk Conference, first-team All-Region VI and second-team NJCAA D-II All-American.

Last season at Missouri, Kulas was a first-team All-SEC selection after averaging 18.3 points per game. She led the Tigers to a 17-14 record and their second straight WNIT appearance.  In just two seasons as a Tiger, Kulas surpassed 1,000 points, becoming the 32nd Tiger to reach the millennium mark.

"It has been remarkable to watch her grow both as a player and as a leader and I am confident she is more than ready for this next phase of her playing career," Missouri head coach Robin Pingeton said in a release from MU athletics. "She has a true passion for the game and it will be fun for all of us to continue watching her play."

The Stars begin their regular season at home against the Tulsa Shock on Saturday, May 17. The team will face the Shock twice in preseason play on May 2nd and 6th.

"We are very impressed with the package Bri will bring to training camp and she is going to compete very favorably to make the team," Stars head coach and General Manager Dan Hughes said in a release by the organization.
