OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – Ben Conrad’s 500th win will remain memorable for more than just the milestone.
Number two-ranked Johnson County outscored number eight Highland 15-2 over the final three minutes, 54 seconds to pull out a 55-52 victory to remain undefeated and secure Conrad his 500th victory as the Cavaliers head coach.
“We really struggled to make shots all night, but the girls stayed together and never panicked,” said Conrad. “Really a total character win tonight. You can’t win that type of game if you don’t have the right kids and culture. This is one of the craziest finishes I have been a part of.”
Trailing by 10, Johnson County drained three consecutive 3-point baskets, two by freshman guard Kara Stricklin and one by freshman guard Tamia Smith to pull within one point with 1:37 to play.
After a bucket by Highland standout forward Cameron McNamara, the Cavaliers closed out the game 6-for-9 at the free-throw line to clinch the win. Three of those six free throw came after freshman Jamya McPherson was fouled on a 3-point attempt. Her free throws put the Cavaliers up 53-52 with 28 seconds left.
McPherson tied sophomore guard Taliyah Scott for the team lead in scoring with 12 points each. While team had its struggles connecting from the field, McPherson and Scott connected for 8-of-13 attempts, each with a 3-pointer and three free throws. Scott was also led the team with eight rebounds and five assists.
Stricklin followed with nine points and Smith tallied eight points and six boards.
McNamara was the top scorer and rebounder in the game with 22 points and 13 rebounds. Madison Brittle finished with 14 and Jalasia Hull added 10 for Highland. JCCC held the Scotties bench to just one point. Highland falls to 17-3 overall and to 7-3 in conference play.
