Cross Country

The 2005 Region VI Cross Country Meet will be hosted by Garden City Community College on Monday, October 24th. Dan Delgado commented a little on the meet. He said that it will be held at Buffalo Dunes Country Club. Some coaches expressed concern about the running surface at the course. Delgado and a few of the other coaches said that it is a good course, but it is also very challenging. He will try to get the course open for a review on the Sunday before the championships. Delgado then asked if coaches would be interested in a spaghetti feed as well as possibly having t-shirts printed up. This would all be done to make the student/athletes have a better experience-not to make money for GCCC. All the information on the spaghetti feed and t-shirt orders will be sent out with the regional information.

Future sites for the Region VI meet were as follows: 2006-Johnson, 2007-Cowley. Those two are set…….Butler, Colby, Allen and Garden expressed interest in the 2008 championship.

The 2005 National Cross Country Meet will be held in Lawrence, KS. The 2006 site will be back in El Paso, TX. It was commented by a lot of coaches that if you don’t have you rooms for this year reserved yet…..the rooms are feeling up quickly.

All-American Honors were brought up……it was believed that the All-American awards would be set at the top 25……As well the coaches association would honor the top 25 American born citizens.

The national Hill-n-Dale will be done by Iowa Central. They will be sending out information…..soon.

Composite schedules were given to help people that needed to still feel dates. (see complete list at end of minutes)

½ Marathon

Spartanburg Methodist will host the 2005 ½ Marathon. The All-American awards went to 6 individuals and 2 team awards. Remember you have to certify these runners different from you cross country certification.

Indoor Track and Field

The 2006 Region VI meet is tentatively to be held at KSU. The dates have not been set yet. Brad Weber spoke about the troubles in the leg work that it takes to get the facility. He added that with hosting the NJCAA outdoor championships that it would be hard for him to do a lot of the leg work. Region VI Track coaches vice-president; Joe Weis said that he would be happy to do the leg work.

This year we will go back to assigning each school an event to run off at the indoor meet. Brad Weber will get a list out to everyone.

The Multi events will tentatively be held at either Johnson or at Highland.

Kirk Hunter brought up the possibility of trying to get future Region VI indoor meets moved to KU. After a little discussion it was decided that we would try and contact KU.

2006 NJCAA Indoor championships will be held March 3rd and 4th at KSU.

Tentative composite schedules were given. (see list at bottom of minutes)

Outdoor Track and Field

Cowley County will host the 2006 outdoor regional meet. The dates are set for May 4th-6th.

Darin Schmitz brought up the possibility of weighting in implements at the regional meet. After a brief discussion it was moved and seconded that as long as we have the equipment to do it properly then we would weigh in all implements at both the indoor and outdoor championships. The vote passed. Mark Phillips volunteered to allow the region to use there weighing equipment until other schools got the equipment. Darin then volunteered to be in charge of the weigh in.

Regional records and a list of past coaches awards were handed out by Kirk Hunter. Thanks for keeping these up to date!!!!!!

Tentative composite schedules were given. (see list at bottom of minutes)

Other Business

Rule Changes-------A lengthy discussion was devoted to some of the rule changes.

  1. There is no longer a XC/Track Scholarship.  Each school needs to denote rather the athlete is on a XC scholarship or a Track scholarship.  This needs to be changed on the scholarships for this year.
  2. You can only have 10 on a cross country scholarship and 20 on a track and field scholarship. The cross country runners will not count as your 20 as long as they do compete in cross country.
  3. Starting in fall 2006 athletes from other sports will count for both sports. As the way it is right now a volleyball player can walk on the track team and it will not count as one of your 20 in fall 2006 they will count.

It was expressed that we as coaches feel that they are making changes that we are against and want to express this to our athletic directors and presidents.

Meeting was adjourned at 7:50 P.M.
