Baseball opens 2020 season with doubleheader sweep

GAME 1

PRATT, Kan.- The frigid weather on Monday wasn't on the side of either dugout, but the Beavers braved the cold en route to opening the 2020 season with a convincing 9-4 win.

With the season still in its infancy, Coach Thompson pieced together innings with five pitchers, with Quinn Tocheniuk starting the afternoon for Pratt. Tocheniuk pitched two clean innings, sandwiching three strikeouts in between. Jacob Brault followed Tocheniuk, as Brault didn't allow a run in his two innings, also recording three strikeouts. Waldemar Fernandez ran into some trouble in the third inning, as the freshman certainly caught a case of the collegiate jitters. He didn't record an out among the four batters he faced, allowing three runs on three hits and a walk.

Justin Lamatsch managed to limit the damage, as he pitched to the tune of two scoreless innings, allowing two walks while posting a strikeout. Ryan McFarland secured the win in the top of the seventh, allowing one run (unearned) on a pair of hits.

Fighting through an afternoon not conducive to hitting, the Beavers still managed to threaten at the plate. Bryan Payton led Pratt with three runs batted in, as the shortstop finished 1-4 on the afternoon. Jake Carroll, Hunter Kelley, and Andrew Garry were also credited with RBI's. Carson Cheatwood catalyzed fulfilled his leadoff duties, reaching base twice on a pair of walks while scoring three of the Beavers nine runs.

GAME 2

As the sun dropped, so did the temperature in the second game of the doubleheader. Though, the Beavers offense found a spark, paving the way to a six-inning 14-4 win.

Chase Veatch was a perfect 3-3 with three singles in the second game, driving in a pair of runs. Bryan Payton was 2-4 with a double and four RBIs. Brendan Tauber was 2-3 with two doubles as well. Carson Shook started on the mound and as was expected, pitched limited innings. Shook tossed two clean innings, allowing only a hit and a walk to go with three strikeouts. Ethan Baalman, Richard Mays, Erick Murray and Keyton Barnes all pitched an inning each. Baalman and Murray were charged with two unearned runs each.

The Beavers travel to Mount Pleasant, Texas this weekend for a three-game series against Northeast Texas Community College. Due to weather, the originally-scheduled Friday doubleheader and Saturday single game have been moved to a doubleheader on Saturday and a single ballgame on Sunday.
