Grizzlies win defensive battle in Goodland, remain undefeated

The Butler women's basketball team held the Mavericks to 30 points on their home floor and came away with a 21-point win to improve to 8-0 overall on the year and 7-0 in KJCCC play.

Butler held Northwest Kansas Technical College to less than half their average points scored per game as the Mavericks totaled just 30 points on Saturday. They kept them to 20% shooting from the floor, keeping their streak alive this season of holding teams to 30% or less shooting.

It was a slow start for Butler in the first quarter as they couldn't get their shots to fall. They came more alive in the second quarter to take a 32-17 lead into the break. There were no fireworks in the second half as both teams struggled offensively. Butler out rebounded the Mavs and kept them to just 13 second half points and came out on top 51-30.

Paris Mullins tied her season high with 18 points in the contest to lead all scorers while also totaling nine rebounds. She was 5-7 form the floor and 8-8 from the FT line. Tamara Nard finished with 10 rebounds to go along with her seven points and Kaylee Nero also added in seven in the game.

"I was happy with the way we finally attempted to do what we have been practicing," said head coach Mike Helmer. "Although we didn't finish everything, I was very proud of how we came out and tried to do what we have worked on."

NEXT UP: Butler will have a short turn around and will head north to Concordia, KS for a 6:00pm matchup with Cloud County (4-3, 3-3) and their first KJCCC East matchup.

NOTES: Last time the Grizzlies held an opponent to 30 points or less was on November 5, 2018 when they defeated Tabor College JV 72-27 in El Dorado… Grizzlies have never lost to the Mavericks in the short all-time series…30 is the least number of points allowed this season.
