Southwestern Spartans Men’s Basketball Weekend Recap

The Southwestern Spartans split their weekend doubleheader, moving to 5-6 on the season.

Friday, Dec. 6: Southwestern defeated Graceland JV, 97-73, in a dominant second-half performance. After trailing 40-33 at halftime, the Spartans surged with a 64-point second half, fueled by standout performances from Rickey Loftin II, Theo Alexandersson Ohnell, and Donnary Fontenot. Loftin notched a double-double with 24 points and 11 rebounds, while Alexandersson and Fontenot each added 21 points. Coach Darryl Fletcher noted that early selfish play limited the team but praised their ability to regroup and finish strong.

Saturday, Dec. 7: The Spartans fell to Kansas City Kansas Community College, 90-66, on the road. Despite 21 points from Loftin off the bench and 13 points from Fontenot, Southwestern struggled defensively, allowing KCKCC to shoot 50.8% from the field, including 44.4% from beyond the arc. The Spartans shot just 29.4% from three-point range and were outrebounded 39-28.

Southwestern will look to bounce back in ICCAC play this week with a road game at NIACC on Wednesday and a home matchup against Ellsworth on Saturday.
