Lady Saints coast to a 68-41 victory over Thunderbirds
LIBERAL, Kan. – The Seward County Community College women's basketball team cruised past Cloud County Community College, 68-41, Wednesday at the Greenhouse.
The Lady Saints improved to 8-5 in the Jayhawk Conference and 13-6 overall. Seward hosts Cowley at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Greenhouse. The Gameday Sponsor is Community Bank.
Seward, which led from start to finish, began the game with a 10-0 run and held Cloud scoreless until the 4:43 mark of the quarter. The Lady Saints went on to a 16-11 lead after one quarter.
The Lady Saints turned on the pressure in the second quarter, holding the Thunderbirds to five points on 1-of-11 shooting from the field and taking a 32-16 advantage at the half.
Cloud made it interesting to start the third quarter, cutting the lead to six at 35-29 with 3:46 remaining, but Seward turned up the defense, forcing four straight turnovers and closing the quarter with 7-3 run to open a 10-point margin, 42-32.
The defensive effort continued into the fourth with the Lady Saints going on a 12-0 burst and opening a 54-32 lead at the 6:02 mark. The Thunderbirds did not score until midway through the quarter and the Lady Saints coasted the rest of the way.
Avery Marchino had 16 points and Kylie Hunt and Allie Myers each added 13 points for Seward, which continued to be efficient from the free-throw line going 17-of-20.
The Lady Saints were dominant on boards with a 43-25 rebounding advantage. Hunt grabbed 10 rebounds, Myers had nine and Marchino took down seven.
Talasia Thomas scored nine points and Bre Frazier, TiAna Davis and Lauren Marron each had seven points for the Thunderbirds, who fell to 7-6 in conference play and 12-6 overall.
