GARDEN CITY, Kan. - The Colby Community College Trojans Women's basketball team drops first Jayhawk conference game on the road at Garden City Community College; 76-58.
After a sluggish first quarter that saw the home team race out to an early lead with a swarming defensive effort and crisp offensive execution, the Trojans found themselves down big at the half; 46-18. In the first-half the Trojans had 17 turnovers that allowed Garden City to race out to open looks and scoring opportunities. "They really punched us in the mouth early and it took a while for us to decide if we were up for the fight or not." Stated Coach Spence.
Regrouping at half-time, the Trojans found their composure and we saw a much different basketball team second-half. The Trojans settled in and continued to compete tough always adjusting in the moment. Outscoring the Broncbusters in the second-half 41-30, the visitors would execute in both sides of the ball much better. Handling their defensive pressure and playing through contact better, the Trojans were able to get the ball in gaps for drives and passes for scores. The defensive effort picked up and limited the Busters to offensive looks. Cutting the deficit to nine points, it looked as though the Trojans were up for the fight. Untimely turnovers down the stretch and free throws for the Busters would eventually prove to be the difference in the game.
"We most definitely have to learn from this experience and find a group who will get us started off better, to give us a chance on each possession. We can simulate what GCCC does in our practice, which does bring a need to adjust in-game. I'm hoping we will compete tougher moving forward and learn that we can compete and do better at this. I've challenged each of our players to be more invested and work harder when they are with us in practice and during their homework time outside of practice. The only way we grow and improve is to be more invested." Coach Spence remarked.
Next game for Colby will be home against Dodge City Community College on Tuesday; November 201st at 5:30 p.m. CT.
