Scotties get back on track with big road win over Hesston

The Highland Men's Basketball team bounced back after a tough home loss last Saturday defeating Hesston College on the road 93-75 to improve to 17-6 overall and 2-1 in Region VI play.

The Larks, behind a loud student section, came out shooting lights out taking a nine-point lead in the first five minutes of the contest. Consecutive baskets by DJ Doakes and Jaylin Rutherford cut the Highland deficit to just one-point with 11:05 to play in the first half.

Leland Harvey gave the Scotties a spark off the bench scoring back to back buckets giving Highland a 29-22 lead with 6:50 left in the half. Highland was able to hold off the late run by the Larks and carry a nine-point, 44-35 lead into the break.

Holden Redparth and Alonzo Williams took over in the second half offensively giving Highland a 15-point lead with 12 minutes to play. The Larks kept it interesting closing the gap at eight-points with 5:03 to play but the Scotties were too much down the stretch and won the game 93-75.

Redparth and Williams led the way for Highland each scoring 18-points. Redparth finished with a double-double 15-points and 11 rebounds and Williams pulled down eight boards to go with his 15-points. Jaylin Rutherford scored 13-points and Taiveyhon Mason, who was benched in the first half for foul trouble, went onto score 12-points and dish out five assists. DJ Doakes and Leland Harvey both had strong performances off the bench with Doakes scoring nine-points and seven rebounds and Harvey scoring eight-points.

Both teams had great ball control with Hesston only turning it over six times and Highland finishing with just four. Highland won the rebound battle 49-33 grabbing 14 offensive boards and scoring 16-points off seconds chances.

The Scotties are now 17-6 overall, 1-1 in KJCCC play and 2-1 in Region VI play. They travel to Kansas City to take on the Blue Devils of Kansas City Kansas on Saturday, February 3 at 4:00pm.
