Highland Women Cruise to 8-0 Start to Season

The #7 Highland women's basketball team made it 43-straight wins at home with a 128-17 win over University of St Mary (KS) JV on Friday. The home winning streak stretches back to 2017 for the lady Scotties.

After a 5-0 start to the ball game for Highland the Spires of St Mary would score back-to-back buckets making it 5-4 and it would never be that close again as the Scotties over the final seven minutes of the first quarter outscored St Mary 23-0 and led 28-4 at the end of the first quarter.

The runs continued for Highland as they turned Spire turnovers into layups and buckets with regularity on their way to leading 52-10 at halftime. Third quarter was filled with more and more turnovers for the Spires and Highland was several easy buckets outscoring the St Mary 43-4 in the third quarter. Scotties opened the final quarter of the contest with a 23-0 run and won 128-17.

Highland shot over 50% from the floor for the fourth time this season shooting 56.6% from the floor, while forcing 53 Spire turnovers in the contest as the Scotties recorded 36 steals. Scotties also shared the ball well with 36 assists on 56 made field goals.

Scotties put together several season best numbers as they posted team season highs in points (128), assists (36), steals (36), field goals made (56), field goals attempted (99) and opponent turnovers (53). While Highland also had their lowest amount of turnovers in a game this season with 11 and allowed the lowest total points by an opponent under Head Coach, BJ Smith in his nine years at Highland.

Five players notched double figures on the night led by Tiana Gipson who had her fifth career 30+ point performance scoring 35 points on 14-22 shooting including 7-14 from three-point range, while adding six steals and four assists. Destiny Cartwright tallied a career best 21 points on 9-14 shooting adding five assists and four rebounds.

Riana Lawson recorded her fourth double figure game as a Scottie with 19 points with six assists and five rebounds, while Khaliah Hines continued to fill the stat sheet posting 13 points, six assists, five steals and five rebounds. Kate Ogle posted a career best 12 points, while also chipping in five rebounds, four steals and two assists.

The win moves the Scotties to 8-0 on the season and keeps their win streak at home rolling with 43-straight wins at home. Highland is back in action again on Monday, November 25th at 6:00pm when the Scotties host Missouri Valley JV.
