
The Kansas City Kansas Community College women's volleyball team took on No.5 Richard Bland, North Iowa Area Community College and Des Moines Area Community College in Fort Dodge, Iowa over the weekend, coming home with three wins. As of Oct. 28, the Blue Devils sit in third place in the KJCCC with a conference record of 6-2, just behind Cowley (8-0) and Johnson County (7-2).
In the first match, the Blue Devils took down No.5 Richard Bland in four sets with scores of 20-25, 25-9, 25-18 and 25-21. Geme Ajekwu was a star on the defensive side as she recorded six block assists, her second highest this season. Mercedez Brown led the team with 13 kills on her 24 total attempts while recording seven digs. Veronica Rolando had 22 assists along with an impressive six service aces. Ava Rann led the team with 16 digs and added a service ace as well.
In the second match, the Blue Devils swept NIACC with scores of 25-12, 25-17 and 25-13. Ajekwu once again recorded a great outing with nine kills on her 15 total attempts, two block assists and two digs. Glodalys Colon helped the offense with nine kills on her 22 total attempts. Rolando had 20 of the 30 assists and added four service aces to her KCKCC single season record breaking total.
On Oct. 26, the Blue Devils took down DMACC in four sets with scores of 26-28, 25-22, 25-17 and 25-21. Brown led with 17 kills on 49 total attempts and had a team-high 16 digs. Alejandre Aponte was right behind her with 15 digs. Tatianna Murray had her career-high six block assists along with six kills. Ajekwu was the other Blue Devil with double digit kills (11) and had four block assists. Briazia Osborne and Veronica Rolando were responsible for 37 of the 41 assists.
The next match for the Blue Devils volleyball team is against Independence Community College at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 28, at Rockhurst University in Kansas City, Mo.
