Highland Women Suffer First Loss of Season Falling to Johnson County

The Highland women's basketball team has been rolling all season but on Saturday in a rivalry showdown the Scotties found themselves on the wrong side of the score for the first time this season falling 90-75 to Johnson County.

The top 10 battle didn't disappoint with back and forth action throughout the contest with the lead changing hands eight times over the course of the game. After falling down 11-9 Highland mounted a 7-0 run to lead 16-11 and finished the first quarter strong outscoring Johnson County 14-7 from the 11-9 score and led 23-18 after the first quarter.

A 5-0 run to open the second quarter tied the game at 23-23 but the Scotties had an answering including a big three-pointer from Belinda Ames and the Scotties would head into halftime up 35-31.

Second half saw much of the same with the back and forth pace continuing and Johnson County swung the lead to their favor just a little over halfway into the third quarter. But once again the Scotties had an answer as Charlay Conway tallied a pair of free throws to tie the game at 54-54 late in the third and then a deep three-pointer by Tiana Gipson made it a one-point game entering the fourth quarter as the Cavaliers of Johnson County led 58-57.

In the fourth Highland saw Johnson County grow the lead and the Scotties fell behind by double figures down the stretch and free throws in the final minutes led to the Highland 90-75 loss to Johnson County.

Scotties shot just 36.1% from the floor in the game, while Johnson County was 51% from the floor in the game and went 31-45 from the free throw line. Highland struggled on the board also being out rebounded 41-27.

In the loss Erin Randle notched a double with 21 points and 13 rebounds, while Tiana Gipson finished with 17 points going 5-9 from three-point range and Conway chipped in 13 points off the bench.

The loss moves Highland to 19-1 overall and 5-1 in KJCCC play. Scotties now turn their attention to another Top 10 clash in the Conference play as they host #7 Labette on Wednesday, February 12th; it will be sophomore recognition night.
