MCC volleyball sweeps Garden City CC to open season

The McCook Community College volleyball team overcame a slight case of opening-night jitters in the first set of the season but went on to sweep Garden City Community College Thursday night 27-25, 25-15 and, 25-18 in the Peter and Dolores Graff Events Center.

The Lady Indians came out strong in the first set to take a comfortable lead, but stalled just enough to let the Broncbusters back into the set.

"I think that just goes back to how young we are (four sophomores and 10 freshmen) -- and I may be saying that all season -- but it does take time for the girls to be able to work together as a team," said MCC Coach Hayley Kobza.

The coach was pleased with how many players were able to step into the rotation and fill roles and make adjustments and she plans to continue that this weekend for the four-game tournament in North Platte.

"I feel like everybody we have on the team is great, they are so versatile and ready to play," Kobza said.

Freshman Fernanda Canedo, (Cochabamba, Boliva) led the Lady Indians with 15 kills. Sophomore Mallory Brown (Colorado Springs) had six. Freshman Quinci Johnson, (Nunn, Colo.) was credited with four and sophomore Bailey Honn, (McCook) had three.

Kobza was also pleased with the improvement from the Tuesday night scrimmage with Durham College. "We wanted to fix some little mistakes from Tuesday so I gave each of the girls little things to work on and you could tell, they took it to heart," Kobza said.

The Lady Indians will see some familiar and motivated foes in the Mid-Plains Subway Invite in North Platte. The Lady Indians will start the day Friday with a 3 p.m. game with Eastern Wyoming then take on Durham College at 7 p.m. On Saturday, MCC plays Hesston College (Kan.) at 10 a.m. and Garden City at 2 p.m.

"Those rematches with Durham and Garden City they're going to want to come gunning for us so we're going to have to bring the heat and our freshmen better be ready to go," Kobza said.

Durham College of Oshawa, Ontario has been in McCook since Sunday for preseason training and a cultural exchange with the MCC volleyball team. The Lords played Western Nebraska in the early game Thursday at the Peter and Dolores Graff Events Center and lost in three sets 25-20, 25-14, 25-19.
