After a 2-0 start to the 2019-20 season picking up both wins on the road the Highland women's basketball team took the court at home on Wednesday night and picked up an 82-63 win over Concordia University JV.
It was a slow start to the contest for both teams with the score being tied at 5-5 for nearly two minutes but by the end of the first quarter the Scotties held a 14-8 lead. The second quarter was much of the same for both teams filled with turnovers and sluggish play as the Scotties struggled from the field but held the Bulldogs down, also. Headed into intermission Highland held a 29-23 halftime lead.
Scotties came out of the gates in the second half with a 10-0 run to open the half pushing the lead to double figures at 34-23 at the 9:03 mark in the third quarter. That lead continued to expand especially behind the hands of
Armani Turner who went on a second half scoring frenzy dropping 33 points in the second half of her 40 in the game. She helped the Scotties extend the lead to 20 points at the 5:33 mark in the third quarter as Highland led 46-26. By the end of the third Scotties held a 55-44 advantage over Concordia JV.
The Bulldogs made push late third quarter into the fourth and drew within single digits but the Scotties ultimately proved to be too much and closed out the game on a 15-3 run to earn the 82-63 win at home.
Highland shot only 38.4% from the floor in the contest as a team but did win the rebounding battle by a wide margin 52-36, while recording 19 steals and forced 31 Concordia turnovers. Scotties also have 18 turnovers of their own with 13 in the first half.
Turner speared headed the Scotties performance scoring nearly half of the teams points as she dropped a career best 40 points while going 6-12 from three-point range, adding three rebounds and five steals.
Khaliah Hines finished with 10 points, eight rebounds, three assists and two steals, while
Kate Ogle tallied eight points and grabbed 10 rebounds.
Tiana Gipson tallied nine points and
Erin Randle had her third straight double figure rebounding game with 11 boards.
With the win #12 Highland improves to 3-0 on the season and Head Coach
BJ Smith moved to 127-8 at home in his Highland coaching career, extending the teams home winning streak to 39-straight games. Scotties continue the season on Friday, November 8
