Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Scotties defeat ranked Cardinals for second time this season

The Highland Women's Basketball team kept the win streak alive after their second match-up against the #11 Labette Cardinals on Saturday afternoon. The team was hot from behind the arc going 13-25 with a season best 52% led by sophomore Blaize Burgess to take the win 96-74.

Mariane De Caravalho took charge for the Scotties in the first half putting up 23 of the teams 54 point at the half. The team went 9-16 for three's while the Cardinals could not get one to fall, shooting 0-9. The Cardinals were forced to 15 turnovers to the Scotties eight but ultimately would end up about even with Labette having 21 to the Scotties 19.

Berniezha Tidwell came off the bench to contribute 17 points behind Caravalho with 35 and Burgess with 25. Caravalho picked up a double-double with 10 rebounds, and Burgess and Tidwell combined had 10 rebounds, nine assists, and four steals. The Cardinals had two with 20+ points as well but a low shooting percentage did them no justice.

Both teams were even on rebounds with 39 each but the Scotties shared the ball more with 21 assists to the Cardinals eight. Head Coach BJ Smith shared his comments after the win, "Well obviously early our energy was good. A big key for us is do our job; not more than that, not less than that.... When you're in a team situation the best team doesn't always win, its the team that makes the greater effort and imposes their will on the other team."

The team will travel to Johnson County on Wednesday the 14th to take on the #7 Cavaliers with a 5:30 tip-off. Head over to http://scottieathletics.com/schedule.aspx?path=wbball to view the full box score, post game, game photos, and more!
