THE LAST TIME THEY MET
AUGUST 24, 2023 – GARDEN CITY, Kan. – Garden City 27, Butler 22
No. 12 ranked Butler football nearly completed a comeback on the road at No. 9 Garden City, but came up just short as they dropped the season opener 27-22 at Broncbuster Stadium. With less than two minutes remaining in the game and the Grizzlies having only two timeouts trailing 27-22, there was only one option, and that was to try an onside kick. Freshman punter Isaac Saye proceeded to kick a dribbler that bounced off a Broncbuster and Butler freshman defensive lineman Seth LeClair jumped on it. Just like that the Grizzlies had new life on their own 46-yard line. Ultimately Garden City picked off a Tanner Murray pass on fourth and nine at the Garden City 26-yard line that ended the game as GCCC took over with 21 seconds left. Sophomore linebacker Eunique Valentine led Butler with 15 combined tackles as well as 1.5 tackles for loss. Murray was 14-of-32 for 195 yards, two touchdowns and an interception. Seth McGowan led the rushing efforts with 10 carries for 45 yards and a touchdown while freshman receiver Justin Stephens led the Grizzly wide outs with three receptions for 54 yards.
LAST TIME OUT FOR BUTLER
The No. 13 ranked Butler football team earned a 16-10 conference road win over the No. 15 ranked Highland Scotties at Porter Family Stadium on Saturday afternoon. Butler (3-2, 2-0 KJCCC) remains unbeaten in conference play and on the road where they have picked up all three of their wins. Highland moves to 4-3 and 1-3 in KJCCC action.
The Grizzly defense held Highland to -2 yards rushing, forced four turnovers and tallied seven tackles for loss. Sophomore linebacker Landon Boss led the way with nine tackles including three tackles for loss. Butler also ended the game with nine pass breakups, all nine coming from different players. True freshman quarterback Jayson Zardavets took over for Mason McHugh and played the rest of the game from the second quarter on. It was the first action of his collegiate career, and he finished 10-of-22 for 120 yards and a touchdown, also rushing eight times for 34 yards. Zardavets tossed a 42-yard touchdown to Nick Brown down the seam at the end of the third quarter that saw Butler regain the lead, 13-10. It was Butler's only touchdown of the game. Grizzly freshman tailback Markellus Bass rushed 21 times for 84 yards in the game, serving as Butler's lead back. Both the carries and yardage were career-highs.
