Lady Indians knock off 20th ranked NJC

The McCook Community College volleyball team beat Northeastern Junior College Saturday at the Peter and Dolores Graff Events Center. The Lady Indians took the 20th ranked Plainswomen in four sets, 25-23, 25-20, 19-25, 25-23.

"I just loved the way we played as a team. We served aggressively, passed well hit well and had very few errors," said MCC Coach Hayley Kobza.

"There have been times this year we've looked like we are young but today everyone played so well -- even the girls who aren't playing," Kobza said. "I look down the bench and I love seeing what sort of energy those players bring for their teammates."

Freshman Fernanda Canedo, (Cochabamba, Boliva) led MCC with 16 kills.

The coach was once again pleased with progression of her three freshman middles in Kallie Cathcart, (Holly, Colo.), Jayceea Hanson, (McCook) and Emily Barr, (Hershey)
"I liked most all aspects of our game," Kobza said. "I thought our middles played great. We rotate three of them and I kind of make it a challenge for them like 'if you don't show up, the next person's coming in' and they still cheer each other on and I thought all three did great," Kobza said.

Cathcart had six kills and four block assists. Hanson had four kills and Barr had two kills and three ace serves.

Mackenzie Anderson, (Ogallala) had two kills and three bock assists. Sophomore Maddie Kleewein, (North Platte) had four kills.

"We still have some things to work on, but we still won and with Mallory Brown having a very very off day, and that's one of the reasons we rotated our middle Emily Barr in for her and she looked scared, but she went in there and she did exactly what she needed to do and then Mallory came back in and still played hard," Kobza said.

Despite an "off night" of serve receive, Brown, the sophomore from Colorado Springs had 10 kills.

Northeastern, which had its game with Western Nebraska postponed Friday because of a scheduling issue with the officials, falls to 13-6 and 1-1 in the Region IX South Division.

The Lady Indians improve to 16-7 and 3-1 in Region IX South play and play a couple mid-week Nebraska Community College Athletic Conference road games before returning home Friday to host 18th ranked Western Nebraska (18-5, and 2-0 in Region IX South play before Saturday's game with Lamar).

"It's a big week for us, all these games matter, and I told the girls we have to make sure we're ready especially Central at their house," Kobza said. MCC leads the NCCAC with a 3-0 record.

On Tuesday, MCC travels to Beatrice to play a 6 p.m. game at Southeast Community College, (3-20 entering the weekend). The Lady Indians swept Southeast at home Sept. 24, On Wednesday MCC takes on Central Community College (13-14) at 7 p.m. in Columbus. MCC edged the Raiders 3-2 at home on Sept. 18.

Friday against Western Nebraska is set for 7 p.m. in the Peter and Dolores Graff Events Center.
