Rattlers down MCC volleyball in straight sets

LA JUNTA, Colo. The MCC volleyball team opened up Region IX South play Friday with a straight-set loss to Otero Junior College. The Rattlers won 25-13, 25-13-25-20.

"We did not come out ready to play until the third set and even then what we gave was not enough," MCC Coach Hayley Kobza said.

Sophomore Mallory Brown (Colorado Springs) led MCC with six kills and 11 digs. Freshman Fernanda Canedo, (Cochabamba, Boliva) had five kills and 11 digs.

Freshman Jayceea Hanson, (McCook) had four kills and sophomore Kiera Barr, (Granby, Colo.) was credited with 13 digs.

The Indians fall to 12-7 (0-1 in the Region IX South) and continue the southern Colorado trip Saturday with a 1 p.m. game at Trinidad, (5-15 heading into Friday's game with 16-5 Western Nebraska.)

"Tomorrow is a new day and I hope they come out with a vengeance," Kobza said.

Otero improves to 12-5 and will take on Western Nebraska Saturday.

On Wednesday the Lady Indians travel to North Platte for an important Nebraska Community College Athletic Conference Game. That game is set for 7 p.m. Both teams are 2-0 in NCCAC play. The Lady Knights are 9-9 heading into a four-game tournament at Overland Park, Kan.

Next weekend MCC will host a pair of Region IX South games. On Friday Lamar comes to the Peter and Dolores Graff Events Center for a 6 p.m. game which has been designated MPCC Adult Education-Literacy Night. On Saturday Northeastern Junior College comes to town for a 4 p.m. Region IX South game.
