
OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – Yar Manyiel produced not only her best efforts of her career, but one of the best of any player this season on Monday night. The sophomore out of Oak Park High School posted a monster double-double of 17 points and 23 rebounds to lead the Cavaliers to an 84-41 victory over Ottawa University JV.
Manyiel's 23-rebound night ranks as the fifth-best in program history. She grabbed nine offensive and 14 defensive boards. She was also as equally proficient shooting, making 8-of-12 shot attempts. She also blocked two shots and had a steal.
Freshman guard Layla Scott was the game's top scorer with 18 points. She connected on 7-of-16 shots including three from 3-point range to up her season total to 99, which leads the conference and ranks third in the country. With one more made 3-pointer she will become just the fifth player in team history to reach 100 in a season. With two regular season games left and playoff, she could catch the season record of 120 set last year by Saige Grampsas. Scott also tallied five rebounds, three assists and two steals.
Sophomore guard Maizen Williams provided 15 points off the bench and freshman guard Jamya McPherson added 11 points and five boards.
Sophomore guard Taliyah Scott dished out 11 assists running the offense and added seven rebounds and five points. Scott now has 186 assists on the season which leads the conference by 84 assists, and rank second in the NJCAA. For her career, she has 362 assists, third most all-time and she just 36 shy of the all-time record of 398 set by Jacky Smith in 2005-07.
Other key efforts were turned in by sophomore guard Aryanna Grassity (5 points, 8 rebounds, 3 assists), freshman guard Kara Stricklin (7 points, 3 assists) and freshman forward Paige Cheffey (4 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists).
Kaelynn Duncan led Ottawa with 12 points, followed by Kimberly Cruz with 11.
With the victory, Johnson County extends its record home court win streak to 88 straight games, and the regular season win streak to 61 straight.
Johnson County (28-0/11-0) returns to the floor on Saturday, February 22 at 2 p.m. The team will be honoring it five sophomores.
