The Highland women continue their perfect undefeated streak with a 86-61 win of the No. 4 seed Kansas City Kansas Blue Devils o advance to the Region VI Championship game on Wednesday, March 7
th at 1:00pm.
It was playoff basketball Saturday afternoon in Ben Allen Field House as both the Scotties and Blue Devils battled on the court to continue their season.
The Blue Devils gave it everything they had in first quarter handling the Highland ball pressure and making shots while limiting the Highland opportunities and had the game tied 18-18 after the first quarter of play.
It was sophomore standout
Mariane De Caravalho who took control in the second quarter scoring seven of her first half 17 points and the Scotties were able to stretch out a nine-point lead heading into the locker room.
In the locker room, head coach
BJ Smith told the girls "I like the shots you are taking and they will fall. Keep shooting." The Scotties went 2-15 from three-point range in the first half and knew shots were bound to fall in the second half.
Blaize Burgess took that message to heart and came out firing knocking down a deep three-pointer just 21 seconds into the third quarter. She knocked down her second three of the game just a minute later giving Highland a 50-33 lead early in the quarter. Burgess finished 5-9 from three-point land and scored 15 points. Burgess also set a new school record in single season three-pointers making her 92nd three of the season.
The Scotties outscored the Blue Devils 22-13 in the third quarter and took a comfortable 62-44 into the final 10 minutes of the game.
Highland kept the foot on the gas pedal throughout the final quarter and went on to win 86-61, beating the Blue Devils for the third time this season and ending their season with a final record of 21-11.
With the win, Head Coach
BJ Smith also got win No. 200 during his seven seasons at Highland Community College. "The thing more important than win number 200 is win number 201," commented Coach Smith after the game.
Mariane De Caravalho led the way for Highland scoring 29 points, five rebounds and five steals.
Blaize Burgess finished with 15 points and
Stefania Chiziane added in 14 points.
Niccolly Ramalho was the other Scottie in double figures with 10 points.
With the win, Highland advances to the Region VI Championship game on Wednesday, March 7
th at 1:00pm at Hartman Arena in Park City, KS. They will play conference rival Johnson County who defeated the No. 2 seed Labette Saturday 57-46.
