
DANVILLE, Ill. – Johnson County sophomore guard Steven Samuels delivered an overpowering performance Wednesday afternoon for the No. 11 seeded Cavaliers, scoring a career-best 35 points – a program record in NJCAA Division II Tournament play – as the Cavalier rolled to a 90-63 victory over rival Kansas City Kansas in the consolation bracket at Mary Miller Gymnasium in Danville, Ill. On March 8 the Blue Devils defeated the Cavaliers 74-73 to win the Region 6 Championship on JCCC's home floor.
Samuels connected for 14-of-19 shots, including 7-of-11 from 3-point range, setting new team tournament records for points and field while tying the game record for 3-point field goals.
Sophomore forward Brandon Mann rebounded from a season-low two-point effort in the tournament opener to post 19 points on 9-of-12 shooting. He also grabbed 11 rebounds.
Sophomore forward Traeger Rader provided a key 14 points off the bench, making 5-of-9 shots including 4-of-6 from beyond the 3-point arc.
Sophomore guard Ben Miller dished out a team tournament record eight assists, freshman guard Joey Robinson provided seven assists, freshman guard Gavin Harvey had eight points and freshman forward Tavian Cruse tied Mann with 11 rebounds and scored four points.
The Cavaliers led by 20 at halftime and outrebounded the Blue Devils 46-to-26. JCCC also shot 55 percent from the field while holding KCKCC to 39.7 percent.
Kansas City Kansas' top scorer was BJ Stewart with 15 points. Camron Williford followed with 12 points.
With the victory, Johnson County (30-5) advances in the consolation bracket and will face No. 13 seed Henry Ford (25-8) on Friday, March 21 at 8 a.m. CST.
