Highland Men Fall On the Road Against Johnson County

After a strong win at home against Fort Scott, the Highland men's basketball team was looking to start the second leg of Conference play strong and get some revenge against Johnson County but it was a late stretch by the Cavaliers that was the demise of the Scotties as Highland fell 63-57.

Highland led 3-2 early but Johnson County mounted a 7-0 run to take a 9-3 advantage and would work their lead to a 20-9 advantage with just under 12 and half minutes left in the first half. Scotties would stay the course and of the next seven minutes of gameplay, Highland outscored Johnson County 12-1 to tie the game at 21-21 with 5:21 left in the first half. Overall the Scotties finished the first half from the 12:26 mark outscoring Johnson County 17-8 to lead 28-26 at intermission.

The Scotties came out strong in the second half mounting an 8-0 run spearheaded by Marquise Milton and Rashon Johnson and worked their lead to 10-points going up 36-26 just two and half minutes into the second half. Johnson County, however, cut into that lead and kept it close until the 7:50 mark when the Cavaliers took the lead. With 2:32 remaining the contest was gridlocked at 57-57 but Johnson County would score the final points of the game including some free throws to secure the game as Highland fell 63-57.

Highland shot just 33.3% in the contest that featured nearly the same numbers statistically. Scotties went 17-24 from the free-throw line, while Johnson County posted a 20-26 day from the line.

In the loss, Milton notched 17 points, while Johnson chipped in 11 points and Zyon Smith added 10 points off the bench.

The loss moves Highland to 16-8 on the season and 3-3 in KJCCC play. Scotties continue Conference play on Wednesday, February 12th when the Scotties host Labette; it will be sophomore recognition night.
