Highland Volleyball Falls On the Road in Conference Opener

It was a Top 10 clash to open KJCCC play for the #7 ranked Highland volleyball team as they squared off with #3 Johnson County.

After a 4-0 start to the season at the Southeast Tournament the Scotties found themselves on the wrong side of the win loss column on Wednesday against Johnson County falling 3-0 (19-25, 19-25, 25-27).

Scotties fell down 7-1 early in the first set of the night and while they were able to claw back into the contest it wasn't enough in the set to overcome the Cavaliers start to the set. A 4-0 run in the first set led by Brianda Daiz at the serve including an ace from her helped the Scotties close the gap but Johnson County grabbed set one 19-25.

Set two was back and forth for the first few points but once Johnson County established the lead despite the efforts of the Scotties the Cavaliers were able to secure the set victory 19-25.

Behind 2-0 in the matchup Highland needed to capture set three to keep the contest going and it started strong for Highland. Led by the serving of Myla Turner the Scotties rattled off a 5-0 start to the third set but the set would work its way to a tie five times before the 20-point plateau was reached in the set. Johnson County took their first lead of the set at 20-19 but Highland would have a chance down the final tallies to capture the set but the bounce of the ball did not go the way for the Scotties falling 25-27 in the set.

Abby Williams led the Scotties in the loss with nine kills in the contest on a .304 hitting percentage, while Jessica Monroe had eight kills and three blocks. Kellyn Lipasek notched 24 assists in the contest and Turner recorded 12 digs.

The loss sends the Scotties to 4-1 on the season overall and 0-1 in KJCCC action. Highland wastes little time in getting back on the court as they will compete at home for the first time this season on Friday and Saturday, August 30th-31st in the Highland Tournament (Tournament Central). The Scotties will Iowa Lakes and Northeastern Oklahoma A&M at 6:00 and 8:00pm on Friday, while on Saturday will face off with Metropolation and Ellsworth at 1:00 and 3:00pm. All Highland's contests will be played in Ben Allen Fieldhouse and live streamed on the Scottie Sports Network.
