Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Mike Smith

Highland Women Pick Up Road Win Behind Big Third Quarter

It was the tough test to date this season for the #10 Highland women's basketball team as they hit the road for their first true road game of the season and traveled to Coon Rapids, Minnesota to play the #7 NCJAA Division III team Anoka-Ramsey.

The game proved to be a battle from horn to horn as the Scotties battled back from trailing in the first half to snagged the road win and remain undefeated on the season winning 93-79 using a 34-14 third quarter to push themselves to the win.

It was a tight back and forth contest early but Anoka-Ramsey pushed ahead and held the 20-15 advantage after the first quarter and then the Scotties saw their deficit grow as halftime approached as the Rams of Anoka-Ramsey outscored the Scotties 22-15 in the second quarter to lead 42-30 at halftime.

The second half the Scotties ratcheted up the intensity and put together the best quarter of basketball in the third they have played all season outscoring Anoka-Ramsey 34-14 in the frame to take the lead. Tiana Gipson speared the performance dropping 18 points in the third quarter and the Scotties went 13-14 from the free throw in the quarter. Gipson also dropped 18 points in the fourth quarter scoring 36 points in the second half.

Fourth quarter was tight but the establishment of the lead by the Scotties in the third helped guide Highland to the win as they were stout in the second half to come from behind for the 93-79 win.

Scotties in the contest shot 32-41 from the free throw line with a 27-31 performance from the line in the second half, while forcing 16 second half turnovers by the Rams and only turning the ball over five times themselves in the second half. Highland forced 28 turnovers in the contest overall.

A trio of double-figure scorers paced Highland with Gipson leading the charge again as she had her fourth 30+ point career performance dropping a career high 39 points on 10-21 shooting and going 14-16 from the free throw line, while adding six steals.

Khaliah Hines added her third double figure scoring performance of the season finishing with 11 points and six rebounds, while Jahnari Brydlong had a best game as a Scottie with her first career double-double notching 11 points and 10 rebounds, while adding four steals.

The win moves the Scotties to 6-0 on the season and the Scotties are now back home for the next four games starting with an afternoon game on Wednesday, November 20th at 12:00pm against Washburn JV.
