Highland Women's Basketball Home Win Streak Snapped With Loss to Labette

Home court has been something that has stood up for the Highland women's basketball team regularly under the tenure of Head Coach, BJ Smith as the Scotties had only lost eight times at home in Smith's nine years coaching.

Wednesday night that changed as Labette handed the Scotties a 75-62 loss marking the Cardinals first win in Highland against a BJ Smith lead Highland team. The loss also saw the Scotties 49-game home win streak snapped, while also was their first back-to-back Conference losses since the 2015-16 season.

Scotties took an early 3-2 lead behind three free throws from Armani Turner for the first Scottie points of the day but Labette followed suit with an 8-0 run to lead 11-3 and the Scotties didn't get their first field goal of the game until the 2:33 mark of the first half starting 0-8 from the floor. But despite the slow start, Highland finished the first quarter strong closing on a 6-0 run to make it 14-11 Labette.

Highland closed the lead to one multiple times in the second quarter but was unable to take the lead and Labette closed the first half on a 12-2 surge to have the Cardinals up 34-23 at intermission.

Third-quarter belonged to the Scotties as Highland outscored Labette 22-11 going 10-16 from the floor including a buzzer-beating three-pointer by Tiana Gipson to tie the game at 45-45 at the end of the third quarter. Labette snatched the lead back with a 10-0 run to open the fourth quarter and stretched the lead to double figures and the Scotties ultimately ran out of time for another run back into the contest falling 75-62.

Scotties shot 38.1% from the floor, while Labette shot 43.9% and won the rebounding battle 44-34. Bench scoring proved to be a big factor for the Cardinals also as the Labette bench outscored the Scotties bench 32-16.

Armani Turner paced Highland in the loss with 26 points on 8-14 shooting adding four rebounds, while Charlay Conway and Tiana Gipson each chipped in 10 points.

The loss moves Highland to 19-2 on the season and 5-2 in KJCCC action. Scotties look to get back on track on Saturday, February 15th for their final regular-season home game as they host Hesston at 1:00 pm.
