Pitching, early defensive woes costly in 12-5 loss to Broncs

HAYS, Kan. The McCook Community College baseball team got down early Thursday and lost a 12-5 decision to Garden City, in a game moved to Kansas because of field conditions in McCook.

The Broncbusters took advantage of a first-inning Indian error and went on to score three unearned runs to lead 5-0 before MCC came to bat. Freshman Trey Taliaferro (freshman Coconut Creek, Fla.) smacked a solo home run to lead off the bottom first but the Broncbusters regained the five-run lead with a run in the second off MCC starter Yasnier Laureano (sophomore, Anderson, S.C.) who pitched the first four innings, allowing three earned runs, seven hits, four walks. He struck out six.

Kade Wroot (sophomore, North Platte) tripled to lead off the MCC fourth and came home to make it a 6-2 deficit on an RBI-single off the bat of Aiden Ferry (freshmen, Monroe, Wash.).

Sophomore Austin Mathews (Clearwater, Fla.) wiggled out of a bases-loaded, nobody out jam in the fifth inning with a strikeout and two outs on the bases.

Both teams scored a run in the sixth inning, but Garden City added three in the seventh off Anthony Kingsbury (sophomore, Gatineau, Quebec) who went 1.2 innings and left after surrendering four runs on five hits, two walks and two strikeouts.

MCC scored its run in the sixth on a solo homer by Caleb Eiguren (freshman, Westminster, Colo.) before Garden City pulled out to a 10-3 lead with the three-run seventh, added single runs in the eighth and ninth innings off hurlers Holden Hopkins (sophomore, Norman, Okla.) and freshman Troy Shepherd (McDowell, N.C.).

MCC pitchers gave up 17 hits, walked six and struck out 11. The defense committed three errors and a wild pitch leading to four unearned runs.

The Indians scored twice in the eighth on a double by Trevor Pacheco (sophomore, Pueblo, Colo.) and a two-run home run from Wroot.

MCC nine hits lead by Wroot's three including a single, double and triple.

Garden City improves to 7-8, the Indians go to 6-7.

On Saturday MCC will host Otero Junior College in an Empire League doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. and on Sunday the two teams will play a nine-inning game.
