Conquistadors Set Tone Early in Home Opener

The long-awaited start to the Jake Williams era of Dodge City Community College basketball went as planned Friday night as the Conquistadors came out in attack mode, beating Bethany College JV 123-61.

The Conqs opened the game with an alley-oop from Mike Marsh to Marlow Gilmore Jr., hopped immediately into a press and never looked back after blitzing the Swedes to the tune of a 24-6 run in the first six minutes of the game.

The alley-oop had a familiar connection for both Marsh and Gilmore Jr. as they followed Coach Williams from his time at USC-Salkehatchie. It was there last year where Gilmore Jr. led the NJCAA in field goal percentage because of similar plays.

The Conqs went into halftime with a 59-26 lead and carried their tenacious effort on both ends of the floor into the second half.

Coach Williams' squad continued to ramp up the pressure, turning 23 Bethany turnovers into 50 fast break points. While the Conqs shot 9-25 (36%) from beyond the arc, they were persistent in taking the ball to the basket as they knew they had the Swedes overmatched.

That persistence led to 86 points in the paint and an overall field goal percentage of 55.3% (52-94) for the game.

While the Conquistadors were led in scoring by Gilmore Jr. and sophomore Dhieu Deing, each with 20 points, sophomore transfer and NJCAA All-American Walyn Napper was as good as advertised scoring 19 points with 13 assists and four steals. Freshman Roger McFarlane added 19 points and nine rebounds, Marsh had 17 points and 10 rebounds, and sophomore Tyler Stallworth chipped in 10 points as the Conquistadors saw six players reach double figures. Overall, 11 players found themselves in the scoring column for the evening.

The Swedes were led by Taylon Chambers' 20 points, Anderson Ormonte's 12 points, and Ethan Finckbone's 11 points. Otherwise, Bethany could not get into a rhythm amidst the Conquistadors smothering defensive attack.

"I'm very happy for our players to be able to go out there and have the opportunity to compete again. We did a lot of good things and will clean up a couple basics in practice leading up to Neosho," said Coach Williams. "We are excited to begin conference play on Wednesday. It will be a great test for us as we experience our first road game together as a team," he concluded.

The Conquistadors are back in action on Wednesday, January 27th as they open up league play in Chanute against Neosho County Community College at 7:30 pm. The game can be found on the Neosho Athletics Youtube page at https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCChB0NobbXkzps2oiVSxtUA.
