Highland Men's Basketball Uses Strong Shooting Night to Top Southwestern

Jumping up to #2 in the National rankings early in the week the Highland men's basketball team hit the court for the first of three home games this week and had a solid test standing in front of them on Wednesday as they topped Southwestern 92-71.

After a 3-3 tie early Southwestern held the lead until the 11:56 mark of the first half when the Scotties snagged their first lead at 17-16 but it was short lived until the latter portion of the first half. Scotties regained the lead late in the first half and managed to push the lead to double figures with just under two minutes left in the first half and carried a 47-34 advantage into halftime ending the first half on a 7-0 run.

Highland came out firing in the second half and took firm control of the game expanding the lead to north of 20 points against the Spartans of Southwestern using a barrage of the three-pointers. Jaron Flowers drained some early three's in the second half and then Marquise Milton drained multiple three's in the second half. The Scotties grabbed the 92-71 win using the strong performance on the night in many phases of the game to secure the win.

For the fourth time this season the Scotties shot over 50% from the floor as a team shooting 53.1% while recording 26 assists on 34 made field goals. Highland also took care of the ball turning over the ball only 10 times and added a strong night from three-point range and the free throw line going 13-30 from three and 11-12 from the free throw line.

A quartet of double digit scorers led the Scotties with 22 points from both Rashon Johnson and Milton. Johnson notched his second double-double adding 12 rebounds and also five assists to his 22 points, while Milton had a hot hand on the night going 8-12 from the field and 6-10 from three-point range, while chipping in four assists and three rebounds.

Flowers tallied a career high 19 points on 7-11 shooting and 5-8 from three-point range. Aguek Deng notched 13 points and six rebounds on the evening.

The win moves the Scotties to 5-0 on the season and stretches their home win streak to 22-straight games. Highland will keep the season rolling on Friday and Saturday, November 15th-16th when they host the Scottie Classic with Johnson County, Ottawa University JV and Quakerdale Prep. Scotties will play at 7:00pm on Friday versus Quakerdale Prep and at 4:00pm on Saturday versus Ottawa JV.
