
OVERLAND PARK, Kan. - Last Saturday, the. No. 8-ranked Johnson County Community College men's soccer team recorded the largest home shutout in 17 years, blanking Hesston College 8-0. On Wednesday afternoon, the Cavaliers posted it largest road victory in 12 seasons with an 8-1 win at Pratt Community College.
Additionally, their 16 combined goals in back-to-back wins are the most in 30 years since JCCC tallied 17 goals in a 6-2 win over St. Louis-Forest Park followed by an 11-0 blowout at Cloud County Community College.
The Cavaliers had the victory secured early netting four goals in the first 24 minutes. They would add four more in the second half to up their season mark to 12-3-0 and to 6-2-0 in conference play.
Sophomore midfielder Monty Almaliky played a part in three of the Cavaliers first four scores. He got them on the board just four minutes, 52 seconds into the match with an unassisted goal off a free kick. It was his seventh goal on the season. He provided the assist on both the third and fourth goals of the half scored by sophomore defender Nick McTighe in the 13th minute and sophomore midfielder Brian Aleman in the 24th minute. It was McTighe's second goal of the season and the fourth for Alleman.
Freshman forward Tanner Poirier scored what proved to be the game winner in the 6th minute off a feed from sophomore forward Caleb Brueckner. It was Poirier's sixth score of the year and second game winner.
While Almaliky was the star of the first half, sophomore forward Ryan Grinstead and freshman midfielder Phillip Mutantika were the key performers in the second half. Grinstead scored twice, finding the back of the net with an unassisted goal in the 47th minute and again in the 85th minute with Matuantika providing the assist. He also assisted the matches' seventh goal scored by freshman defender Liam Catano in the 81st minute, his third goal of 2024.
The other goal in the half came in the 52nd minute by freshman midfielder Kael Drummond, his fourth on the year, with the assist provided by freshman defender Michael Bernabe.
Freshman netminder Ben Hertel stopped two of the three shots he faced to earn the victory, improving to 7-2-0.
Johnson County will close out the regular season Saturday in Beatrice, Nebraska when they take on Southeast Community College. The Cavaliers defeated the Bobcats 1-0 back on September 25.
