The fourth seeded Kansas City Kansas Community College softball team was set to take on the third seeded Cowley College May 9 at the Lake Shawnee Softball Complex. If they won, they would play the winner of the Johnson County vs Allen game later that day. A double elimination tournament, the Blue Devils would have to go perfect for a chance to make it to the championship game. Unfortunately, that was not in the cards for KCKCC.
In the first game, Jaycee Long led the team with two doubles from her three hits against Cowley College. The scoring for the Blue Devils started in the bottom of the second inning when Adrianna Smith hit a solo home run to left field. The score remained the same into the bottom of the fifth inning when the Blue Devils exploded for five runs. McKenna Lester had an RBI single scoring Sydney Becker. Then Savannah Short hit a grand slam over the left field wall to make it a 6-0 lead. The Blue Devils would hold onto the game as they took down the Tigers 6-2. They would wait for the winner pf the 2 p.m. game between JCCC and Allen. The winner of the game will take on the Blue Devils at 6 p.m. later the same day.
Alyssa Droge threw for all seven innings and allowed just two runs from the five Tiger hits. She also struck out 12 of the 27 batters she saw.
For the second game, the Blue Devils scored a run in both the bottom of the first and second inning but unfortunately, those were the only two runs they would score in the game. There was a total of 11 runners left on base compared to five for Johnson County. The game was tied 2-2 from the third inning until the ninth when the Cavaliers hit a two-run home run to take the lead. That was Deja Gardenhire's first home run on the season.
Alyssa Droge threw for all nine innings letting up just four runs, three earned and four hits. She managed to strike out 11 batters as well. Making it 23 total for the entire day.
