Highland traveled down to Fort Scott, Kansas to participate in the Gladbach Classic and squared off against another KJCCC team in Neosho County and also took on Louisiana Christian Prep ultimately coming home with a pair of wins.
On Friday Highland grabbed a tough win over Neosho County 79-69 and then topped Louisiana Christian Prep 98-58 on Saturday.
Scotties opened the action in Fort Scott on Friday taking on Neosho County and got their toughest test of the young season so far. Highland worked up a nine-point lead with 9:30 left in the first half up 24-15 but by intermission the contest was tied at 37-37. The lead grew back into the Scotties favor in the second half and behind a big performance from
Taiveyhon Mason and solid shooting performance overall the Scotties earned the 79-69 win over Neosho County.
Mason led Highland in the win over Neosho County dropping a career high 27 points while adding six rebounds, three assists and two steals as he was 9-15 from the floor and 8-10 from the free throw line. Eleven other Scotties got in the scorer's book but the next highest point total was only nine from
Andre Jackson. Highland finished the contest shooting 44.1% from the floor and went 21-29 from the charity strip in a game that featured 66 total free throws between the teams.
Game two of the Gladbach Classic was heavily in favor of the Scotties as they cruised to the win over Louisiana Christian Prep working to a 40-26 lead by halftime and using a strong shooting performance, big rebounding edge and turnovers to take the game 98-58. Highland finished the contest shooting 52.1% from the floor, while they won the rebounding margin by 21 and forced 24 Louisiana Christian Prep turnovers.
Four guys dropped double figure performances in the contest as Mason tallied 22 points for his third straight 20+ point performance. He added three rebounds, three steals and an assist, while going 10-13 from the floor.
Luiz Machado Jr. dropped 20 points of his own on 7-10 shooting and added five rebounds, while
Rashon Johnson finished with 13 points and five rebounds and
Jaquan Daniels scored 10 points and grabbed seven rebounds.
Highland is off to a 4-0 start this season for the first time since 2015-16 and are scoring nearly 10 more points per game than last year's team average. Scotties are back in action with a full week as they host Des Moines Area Community College on Tuesday, November 13th at 6:00pm then host the Scottie Classic on Friday and Saturday, November 16
th and 17
th and will play Quakerdale Prep and Graceland University JV.
