Pirates drop two in non-conference tune up

BARTLESVILLE, Okla. - The Independence Community College Softball team suffered two losses in their first games back from spring break, 10-4 and 8-4, at the hands of Oklahoma Wesleyan Monday afternoon.

It was a tough start right out of the gate for the Pirates, as the Eagles immediately jumped out to a 6-0 lead, after a first inning where they had eight hits. Following another 1-2-3 inning the Eagles added another run in the second inning to push their early lead to seven. The Pirates were able to break through in the third inning, as three straight Pirates reached base, with the latter being a two-RBI single off the bat of Madyson Paxton, all with two outs. The Eagles never gave Indy much of a chance to get back in the game, as they answered with two runs of their own in the bottom half of the third. The Pirates plated another run in the fourth inning on an RBI single from Kylar Goins, and would add another run in the fifth inning when Paxton came around to score on an error.

Paxton led the way offensively as she finished game one with a pair of hits, and a pair of RBI. Bryndl Biggs, in her first game back in about a month, had a two hit day, while Taylor Nixon reached base a trio of times and scored a run.

In game two, it was Indy who struck early as Madyson Paxton carried over her strong game one, as she reached on a one-out double, and would eventually come around to score on a Kylie Dennison RBI single. OKWU, would quickly even up the score with a run of their own in the bottom half of the opening inning. In the third inning, Indy would once again jump out in front, as an RBI triple from Alexis Yarnell, and an RBI single from Riley Hayes, would give the Pirates a 4-1 lead. Again, the lead would be brief, as the Eagles immediately answered with three runs of their own to even the game up at four. The Pirates struggled to produce any more offense the rest of the game, as only two players reached scoring position in the final four frames of game two. Meanwhile, the Eagles added a single run in the fourth, but were able to break the game open with three runs in the fifth, leading to the eventual 8-4 final.

Kylie Dennison reached base three times and came around to score, while Bryndl Biggs was the only other Pirate to reach base multiple times.

Indy moves to 4-12 on the season, and will now gear up for the start of conference play, this Thursday, as they host Neosho County for a doubleheader beginning at 2:00 p.m.
