Pirates season ends with first round loss to Cowley

ARKANSAS CITY, Kan. - The Independence Women’s Basketball teams 2024-2025 season came to an end with a first round exit in the KJCCC tournament with a 99-58 loss to fifth-seeded Cowley.

The game got off to a quick start as Cowley started their hot shooting afternoon righr from the jump as they knocked down their first two three pointers on their first two possessions of the game. Indy was up for the challenge and battled early as they were able to score six straight points of their own before trading baskets for the majority of the first quarter with the Tigers. Indy had two separate first quarter leads, 11-9 at the five minute mark, and 15-13 at the four minute mark. Cowley was able to quickly tie the game at 15 to spark an 11-0 run to take a nine point lead. A Mikka Chambers three in the final seconds of the quarter cut the deficit to eight. 

Cowley got off to a hot start in the second quarter as well, as they immediately ripped off a 13-4 run to push their lead to 15 at the six minute mark in the quarter. Indy would once again battle and weather the storm as they were able to cut the deficit down to nine at one point, but eventually went to the halftime locker room trailing by 13. 

The second half was all Cowley, as they ripped off the first eight points of the half, as part of a 19-3 run that pushed their lead to 29. From there, Cowley would impose their will on the offensive end, as they finished the quarter with 33 points and pushed their lead all the way to 37. The fourth quarter was about even as Cowley ended up winning the quarter by four, but the 19 fourth quarter points were the highest of the game for the Pirates. 

Ultimately, 30 turnovers for Indy led to 39 points for Cowley and was a big difference in the game. The Tigers also were nearly perfect from the free throw line going 12-13. 

Alisson Reese led the Pirates in scoring with 21, while Mikka Chambers had a double-double with 14 points and a team high 11 rebounds. Asmin Tanhan also finished in double-figures with 11. 

The loss will end the Pirates season, they finish with a record of 3-28 overall, in Coach Shavonda Price’s first season at the helm.
