GARDEN CITY, Kan. – The Northeast Community College volleyball team made a trip to Garden City, Kansas to begin the year Friday as part of the Scooter’s Coffee Invitational. The Hawks downed Frank Phillips College 3-0 before topping Allen County Community College 3-1 to start the campaign 2-0.

Northeast (2-0) faced tight contests in every set against Frank Phillips as the final scores were 25-23, 25-23 and 25-22, but the Hawks were able to dig deep and prevailed each in every time. Northeast has a roster full of eight different freshmen and many were able to impact the showdown in their very first matchup wearing a Hawks uniform.
Game 2 wasn't quite a sweep like Game 1, but Northeast was able to handle the Red Devils in four sets to cap a perfect day on the road.

Head Volleyball Coach Amanda Schultze on the keys to her team securing victories today:
"Ball control," Schultze said. "We stayed in our system for most of the games. Blocking was also a major key. We did a great job defensively at the net."
Schultze on what her group can take from today heading into Saturday:
"We can go in with a little more confidence tomorrow knowing what we can do as a team!" Schultze said.

Another doubleheader is on deck as the Hawks will square off with Ranger College at 8 a.m. before dueling with Trinidad State College at 1 p.m. tomorrow in Garden City, Kansas.
