Highland Caps Week With Road Sweep of Fort Scott

After suffering a few losses earlier in the week the #5 Highland softball team capped last week with a road sweep of Fort Scott to keep the Scotties in the upper portion of the KJCCC standings as the Scotties won 9-0 in five innings and 7-6 in comeback fashion.

The wins moved the Scotties to 22-10 on the season and 11-5 in Conference play as Highland now gears up for more Conference next Thursday, April 18th at home against Cloud County after a pair of non-conference doubleheader's were cancelled leading up tom Thursday.

In game one at Fort Scott the Scotties took the early lead plating a pair of runs to take the initial 2-0 lead and Highland took firm control with a four-run output in the top of the second inning highlighted by two RBI singles by Chevelle Sartin and Sara Shinn. Cassidy Greer brought in Elizabeth Hays in the top of the third for the Scotties on an RBI single to push the Highland lead to 7-0 and Scotties tacked on two more with a two-run home run in the fourth by Alexis Hodapp. Bailey Lacy then continued to stymie the Fort Scott bats and shut the game down in the fifth for a 9-0 five inning Scottie win.

Sartin paced the Scottie offense going 3-3 with three runs scored, two RBI and a double, while Hodapp went 2-3 with two runs scored, a home run and two RBI's. Lacy inside the circle was spectacular tossing five innings of shutout ball giving up just two hits and one walk, while striking out five.

While the Scotties took the early lead 1-0 in the top of the first inning as Sartin notched a double in the inning and then later in the inning on a steal of second by Hodapp came into score giving Highland the 1-0 lead. Fort Scott answered in the bottom of the first with a pair of runs and then tacked on three more runs to lead 5-1 after two innings. A two-run home run from Hodapp, along with two walks and a Fort Scott error helped the Scotties close the gap in the third scoring three making it 5-4. Fort Scott would get another run in the fourth but Lacy who entered the game to pitch in the bottom of the third would only give that to the Greyhounds and the Scotties tallied two in the sixth and one in the seventh to complete the comeback for the 7-6 win.

Sartin, Shinn and Hodapp each all had a two hit contest as Sartin went 2-3 with three runs scored and a double, while Shinn went 2-3 with two runs scored and an RBi and Hodapp was 2-3 with a home run, two RBI's and run scored. Lacy finished the game inside the circle tossing five innings for the win giving up one run six hits, a walk and hit batter, while striking out a pair. Kelly Uthe started the game and tossed two innings of work.

Highland welcomes Cloud County to town scheduled for a Thursday, April 18th contest for a KJCCC doubleheader at 2:00pm.
