
OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – For the second time in 48 hours, the No. 2-ranked Johnson County women's basketball team character and ability to close out a game were put to the test, and now the Cavaliers are well-versed at overcoming adversity and prevailing.
On Saturday afternoon at JCCC Gymnasium, Johnson County trailed No. 11 Allen Community College (17-4 / 7-4) by eight points at the opening of the fourth quarter, and rallied for a 73-67 overtime victory to improve to 27-0 overall and 11-0 in KJCCC Division II play.
Freshman guard Layla Scott led Johnson County with 20 points, but her four made free throws in overtime help seal the victory. For the game she made 10-of-12 free throws along with four field goals including two 3-pointers. She now has 96 made 3-point baskets on the season which leads the conference and ranks third in the NJCAA.
Freshman guard Kara Stricklin led JCCC's bench with 13 points and led the team with three made 3-point baskets. Freshman guard Tamia Smith added 11 points and seven rebounds, and sophomore Aa'Mya Stacker posted her third double-double of the season with 10 points and 12 rebounds.
Sophomore guard Taliyah Scott flirted with a triple-double posting nine points, nine assists and six rebounds, and sophomore guard Aryanna Grassity contributed eight points, three assists and three steals.
Tawhirikura Doyle led Allen with 23 points, draining 8-of-11 shots including 5-of-7 from 3-point range. Alex Burch added 17 points off the bench.
Johnson County quickly returns to action on Monday, February 17 when the host Ottawa University JV at 8 p.m., then return to conference action when the Fort Scott Greyhounds come to town on Saturday, February 22 for a 2 p.m. tip.
