Highland Volleyball Goes 3-1 at KCK Tournament

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3 | Box Score 4 The Highland volleyball hit the court in Kansas City over the weekend at the KCK tournament to keep the season going and posted another winning performance at a regular season tournament going 3-1.

Scotties opened the tournament by dispatching Waubonsee in three sets (25-12, 25-16, 25-11) but then finished the first day of the tournament with a tough four set loss to DMACC (23-25, 25-21, 21-25, 22-25). Highland responded from the loss to go 2-0 on the final day of the tournament on Saturday beating Northeast for the second time this season this time in four sets (21-25, 25-16, 25-19, 25-18) and then swept Metropolitan in three sets (25-21, 25-20, 25-15).

Won 3-0 vs Waubonsee
Highland continued their recent strong stretch in the first match at the KCK Tournament by cruising past Waubonsee who was receiving votes in the latest NJCAA Division II rankings. Scotties held the Chiefs to 16 points or less in all three sets for the three set sweep 25-12, 25-16, 25-11.

Jessica Monroe led the Scotties with 11 kills touting a .500 hitting percentage in the match and added four blocks. Kellyn Lipasek tallied 19 assists, eight digs and three kills, while Myla Turner had nine digs.

Lost 3-1 vs DMACC
It was a tight battle throughout the contest with each set going down to the wire between the Scotties and the Bears of Des Moines Area Community College. After dropping set one 23-25 the Scotties bounced back to win a tight second set 25-21 to square up the match but DMACC squeezed out tight set wins in the third and fourth sets 21-25 and 22-25 to secure the match win over the Scotties. In the loss the Highland recorded a season high 76 digs as a team.

The duo of Cajia Allen and Abby Williams paced the Scotties in the loss each with double figure kills finishing with 17 and 14 kills, respectively. Allen had a double-double in the contest adding 14 digs, while Williams had her best performance as a Scottie with her 14 kills and added three blocks. Lipasek tallied 35 assists and eight digs, while Turner recorded 20 digs. Brianda Diaz and Amber Hildebrand each registered double figure digs also finishing with 11 and 15; for Diaz it was a career high.

Won 3-1 vs Northeast
Day two of the KCK Tournament saw the Scotties drop the first set of the day but then respond to finish the day strong. After falling 21-25 in the first set against Northeast the Scotties controlled the next three sets to take the match by winning the second, third and fourth sets 25-16, 25-19, 25-18 and claim the match win over Northeast.

Scotties had a season best 58 kills as a team in the win and went over 70 digs in a match for the second time this season. Allen had a career high 22 kills and chipped in five digs, while Williams topped her career high for the second time in the tournament posting 16 kills. Monroe added 15 kills for another double figure kill performance. Defensively the Scotties saw several great performances as Hildebrand had her second 20 dig performance of the season, while Nicole Franco and Brianda Diaz each had career best marks with 21 and 14 digs, respectively.

Won 3-0 vs Metropolitan
Highland wrapped up the tournament in Kansas City with a three set sweep of Metropolitan 25-21, 25-20, 25-15 to go 3-1 at the tournament and improve the Scotties to 14-2 in regular season tournament this season.

A trio of gals finished with double figure kills again as Williams tallied 16 kills for the second straight match, Allen added 11 and Monroe had 10. Allen added a pair of aces and nine digs, while Monroe had three digs, four solo blocks and a block assist and Williams had a career best six digs. Hildebrand had her third career 20 dig performance, while Lipasek tallied 42 assists and 10 digs, along with a pair of kills.

The 3-1 performance at the KCK Tournament moved the Scotties to 16-4 on the season. Highland will be in action again on Wednesday, September 25th when they host Labette for KJCCC action and Missouri Valley JV with action starting at 3:00pm. The game will also be Barefoot For Barefeet Shoe Drive as Highland will be taking donations of shoes, jerseys and monetary donations in support of Samaritan's Feet.
