Johnson County improves to 5-2-0 with a 5-1 victory over Allen

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The No. 7-ranked Johnson County Community College men's soccer team took care of business in the first half netting four goals then cruised to a 5-1 victory over Allen Community College Saturday night at the JCCC Soccer Complex. 

Sophomore forward Ryan Grinstead got the scoring going in the 18th minute off a feed from sophomore midfielder Dominic Zuniga.  Grinstead would add a second goal in the 86th minute to cap the scoring. He now has three on the season, along with two assists for eight points. Sophomore midfielder Cade Gassman provided the assist. 

The Cavaliers went up 2-nil in the 22nd minute when Zuniga fed freshman midfielder Grayson Niswonger for his first collegiate score.

Freshman forward Tanner Poirier put Johnson County up 3-0 on one of the most impressive individual plays of the night. Deep in Allen's offensive zone, Poirier stole the ball then raced past all of the Red Devils defenders, dribbled down the field and fired a shot past the keeper in the 28th minute for his third goal of the year. 

JCCC extended its lead to 4-0 in the 35th minute when freshman Kael Drummond scored off a rebound from a corner kick, his second of the season. Sophomore forward Monty Almaliky was credited with the assist.

Allen managed to crack the Cavaliers defense just before the first half ended, but that would be all the offense they produced.

Freshman goalkeeper Ben Hertzel picked earned the victory stopping nine of the 10 shots he faced. With the win he improved to 3-1-0 on the year while lowering his goals against average to 1.50. 

Johnson Count travels to Hesston College on Wednesday, September 18 then returns home to host Pratt Community College on Saturday, September 21 at 5 p.m.
