
The fifth seeded Kansas City Kansas Community College baseball team fell to first seeded Johnson County Community College 7-4 May 16 at Eck Stadium on the Wichita State University campus for the second round of the 2024 Plains District Baseball Championship Tournament. With the loss, the Blue Devils must win out to advance to the NJCAA DI Baseball World Series in Grand Junction, Colo.
The Blue Devils struck first, scoring two runs in the top of the third inning. Peyton Basler singled down the right field line scoring Brady Kern. Later in the inning, Basler scored from a Cavalier ball from the pitcher making it 2-0. The Cavaliers quickly answered in the same inning scoring four runs of their own.
In the fifth inning, Gehrig Goldbeck grounded out to the second baseman while scoring Kern and advancing Basler to second base. Jase Woita then hit a single up the middle and scored Basler to tie the game 4-4.
That would be it for the Blue Devils scoring. and JCCC would score two runs in the fifth and one in the sixth to push the lead to three runs.
Mason Davenport recorded the loss letting in six runs from the six Cavalier hits. He walked and struck out two batters each. Bryson Vawter entered the game in the fourth inning and let in one run from three hits in his 1.1 innings of work. Gavin Killion threw for the last two innings not letting up a single hit or walk while striking out two batters.
The Blue Devils will take on Hutchinson Community College at 1 p.m. May 17 at Eck Stadium for a win or go home matchup. The two teams faced off just one time in the regular season and the Blue Devils came out with a 9-4 victory on Apr. 13 in Kansas City, Kan.
