MCC volleyball sweeps season slate with Garden City

Lady Indians pick up third win over Garden City CC

GARDEN CITY, Kan. The McCook Community College volleyball team completed a season-sweep over Garden City Community College Thursday, but it didn't come easy. The Lady Indians won 29-27, 25-22, 22-25, 25-11.

"It only took three sets for us to warm up, but set 4 is what MCC Volleyball should look like all the time," MCC Coach Hayley Kobza said.

MCC downed the Broncbusters in the home opener Aug. 22 in three sets, and two days later took four sets to post the win in the North Platte Subway Invitational.

On Thursday in Kansas, sophomore Mallory Brown (Colorado Springs) paced the Lady Indians with 14 kills, an ace and an assist block. Freshman Fernanda Canedo, (Cochabamba, Boliva) also had 14 kills, added an ace and two assist blocks.

Freshman Mackenzie Anderson, (Ogallala) had seven kills and two assist blocks and sophomore Maddie Kleewein (North Platte) had five kills and one assist block.

The coach was also pleased with freshman Jayceea Hanson who had five kills and an assist block.

"Jayceea Hanson stepped on the court cold off the bench in the fourth set and played outstanding," Kobza said.

Kallie Cathcart, (Holly, Colo.) had four kills on the night with three assist blocks and two solo blocks. Freshman Emily Barr (Hershey) had four kills and five aces.

Garden City CC falls to 1-15.

"This was a good start for our weekend and I hope we can carry it through for the whole weekend."

MCC improves to 9-5 on the season and has two games left on an eight-game stretch of games against Kansas teams.

On Friday the Lady Indians travel to Arkansas City for a 6:30 p.m. matchup with Cowley College and Saturday at 10 a.m. against Coffeyville Community College.

MCC returns home Wednesday for a 7 p.m. against Nebraska Community College Athletic Conference foe Central Community College and stay home and to face Southeast Community College Sept. 24 at 6 p.m.
