INDEPENDENCE, Kan. - The Independence Softball team couldn't contain the hot bats of Pratt on Wednesday afternoon, as they were swept by the Beavers 14-3 and 12-4.
In game one, the scoring started early and often for Pratt, courtesy of the long ball as they hit three home runs in the first two innings to jump out to a 11-0 lead. The Pirates got one run back in the bottom of the second inning to cut the deficit to 10. The Beavers kept the offense rolling as they got three more runs in the top of the third inning. After that inning Taybor Rardin really settled in, throwing two scoreless innings in the fourth and the fifth. Ultimately, the hole was too large to climb out of for Indy. Rardin was able to drive in two runs on an error, leading to the eventual 14-3 defeat in five innings.
Alexis Yarnell and Madison Wammock each had two hits in game one, and Madyson Paxton and Kylar Goins each had a hit and each scored a run.
In game two, it was more of the same offensively, but this time both teams came out of the gates strong. Pratt exploded in the first inning for five runs, but Indy was quickly able to answer with two runs of their own. The Beavers, once again, did not take their foot off of the gas, as they added another three runs in each of the next two innings. Indy was able to drive in two more runs of their own in the bottom of the second, but then were held off the scoreboard for the rest of the afternoon.
Independence made five errors defensively in game two, but had a nice game offensively as they had 12 hits in the shortened five inning game.
Taylor Nixon and Madyson Paxton each had two hits and two runs scored in game two. Kylie Dennison and Maddison Wammock each had multi-hit games as well. Alexis Yarnell had a game high two RBI in the defeat.
The pair of losses moved Indy to 2-8 on the season, as they now gear up to hit the road on Thursday as they take on Ottawa, before returning home to take on MidAmerica Nazarene on Saturday.
