JCCC falls into a three-way tie for first after losing series against Cowley

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The No. 7 Johnson County baseball team lost its first conference series over the weekend, dropping three of the four games against No. 9 Cowley. The Cavaliers were able to get a split in the first double header at JCCC on Thursday, but dropped the twin bill at Cowley Saturday afternoon, falling 8-2 in seven innings and 2-1 in nine innings.

With the series loss, the Cavaliers fall to 22-9 overall and to 9-3 in conference play, putting them in a three-way tie with Cowley and Coffeyville.

In the opener, Johnson County jumped out the to an early 2-0 lead with single runs in the top of the second and third innings, but the Tigers exploded for a five-run bottom half the third and added three more later in the game for the six-run victory.

Sophomore outfielder Bo Shinkle was the top hitter with two singles and sophomore outfielder Ryker Edwards earned a sacrifice RBI.

In the final game, the Cavaliers held Cowley to just a single and a double, but the Tigers worked 14 free passes. JCCC led 1-0 entering the bottom of the ninth but Cowley managed to score a single run in their half to tie the game and pushed across the winning run in the bottom of the ninth to post the walk-off victory.

Shinkle again was the Cavaliers top hitter with an RBI single in the third inning.

Johnson County will look to rebound with a four-game conference series against Kansas City Kansas beginning Thursday, March 27 at KCKCC. The team will close out the series on Saturday, March 29 with two games at the JCCC Baseball Complex.
