Deing's Sharpshooting Propels Conqs in Conference Opener

The Conquistadors knew early on they had to keep up with the hot shooting of the Neosho Panthers on their home court. However, Dhieu Deing made himself right at home in Chanute, Kansas letting it fly from three-point land early and often as he led the Conqs to their first Jayhawk Conference win of the season.

Deing paced all scorers with 33 points and seven rebounds, including 7-10 from beyond the arc. The Conquistadors needed every bit of that shooting in a tightly contested road matchup with Neosho.

The game only saw two lead changes, both in the first half, but found itself with the score tied five times and the Conquistadors clinging to a four to six-point lead for most of the game.

With just over 2:30 minutes left in the second half, the Conquistadors' depth began to show. Crucial playmaking by Deing and fellow sophomore Walyn Napper helped extend their lead to 14 for the game's final push.

"I'm really proud of our team for staying together in what was our first road experience. Neosho was scrappy and made a lot of shots," said head coach Jake Williams of his first KJCCC matchup. "I thought Walyn (Napper) gave us everything he had and Dhieu (Deing) was scorching hot from three, but freshman DJ Warren came in and played a huge game for Mike Marsh as he battled foul trouble. I'm proud of our guys for playing tough and earning a road win to start KJCCC play."

Coming out on top in his first Jayhawk Conference game is certainly a good feeling, but doing so on the road after a long bus ride makes things a little bit sweeter for Coach Williams.

Deing's 33 points not only led all scorers but was a personal best for him, beating out a 28-point performance last year as a freshman at Division II USC-Aiken against Clayton State.

In 40 minutes of play, sophomore Walyn Napper was second on the team in scoring as he flirted with a triple double of 19 points, six rebounds, and eight assists. Freshman DJ Warren came off the bench with 14 points and six rebounds with sophomore Mike Marsh in foul trouble most of the game. Marsh still came in big with 11 points, including eight in the second half to go with his five rebounds.

The Panthers put five guys in double figures as they tried to keep pace with their girls' team in the shooting department. De'Antry Hughes came off the bench to lead Neosho with 19 points and 14 rebounds. Magic Reliford knocked down five threes on his way to 17 points. Tremaine Chelsey (16 points), Deondre Buggage (11 points), and Daniel Titus (10 points) all scored in double figures as well.

The Conquistadors are back in action at home against Butler Community College, on Saturday, January 30th. The conference double-header will begin with the women's game tipping off at 1:00 pm CST, with the men's immediately following. Though no fans will be in attendance, a live stream link will be available.
